The parent company of Facebook dubbed 2023 the “year of efficiency,” cutting costs and jobs to get its profitability back on track.

Meta lost nearly 70% of its stock price in 2022, leading many to question Zuckerberg’s plan for the future.

All that changed last week when Meta shares shot up 20% after an impressive earnings report, currently at an all-time high of $470. The resulting $197 billion increase in its market cap is history’s biggest single-session market value addition.

In the report, Meta announced a 25% rise in revenue to just over $40 billion from $32 billion the year prior. Net income more than tripled to $14 billion from $4.6 billion over the same time frame. The company hasn’t seen such growth in years, and these numbers bode well for Meta’s future.

In addition, this quarter marks the first time Meta will pay out a dividend. Shareholders will receive $0.50 per share on March 26.

The amount isn’t large, but investors are optimistic that these dividends indicate the company is maturing. It also speaks volumes for Meta’s bottom line.

Cash equivalents climbed to $65.4 billion as 2023 came to an end. That’s up 62% from 2022. A $50 billion share buyback program currently in place is also designed to benefit shareholders.

It’s no surprise that Mark Zuckerberg stands to benefit the most from Meta’s recent fortune. He’s the biggest shareholder, with some $350 million in shares.

Last week's jump adds more than $28 billion to the Meta founder’s net worth despite only collecting a $1 salary. The new dividend payouts could add roughly $700 million to that total.

We don’t envision Meta resting on its current laurels. Zuckerberg remains excited about the prospects of his metaverse. Meta is one of the biggest players in virtual, augmented, and mixed-reality computing. The Quest 3 is the latest in the line of Meta’s offerings to the space, and it seems to beat its predecessors in almost every way.

The company is also stepping up its game on the artificial intelligence front. Its AI platform, Llama, stands to compete with the likes of ChatGPT.

It should be interesting to see where Meta heads this year and whether investors in Meta stock will be able to ride this wave into the future or crash on the shore before long.

Master the Art of Cleaning House This Spring for Better Health, Happiness, and Organization https://wealthofgeeks.com/cleaning-house-this-spring/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 22:05:07 +0000 https://wealthofgeeks.com/?p=1216041 For those planning on cleaning their house this spring, the benefits may be more than just tidier spaces and sparkling surfaces.

If seasonal house cleaning and decluttering seem merely a tedious chore for some homeowners, they may want to rethink how and why they approach their cleaning house jobs this spring.

Research has shown that all that mopping, wiping, vacuuming, and dusting that come with spring cleaning not only makes a home sparkle top to bottom like it's had a professional cleaning, but they can also help with overall health, happiness, and general well-being. The benefits to homeowners who roll up their sleeves and get the cleaning and housekeeping done themselves rather than hire a maid service are far greater than most people initially realize.

With the spring cleaning season upon us, now is the ideal time for homeowners to prepare their tools and mindset to enjoy all that this season of renewal has to offer. Even if they don't normally enjoy cleaning a house and prefer to hire a maid, they may change their tune when they learn the benefits of cleaning their home themselves.

A Fresh Start to the Season

As hints of the warm weather appear in the spring, inhabitants of the northern hemisphere start to feel naturally ready for a fresh start and a new season. Wardrobes are switched out and updated, windows are flung open, and a new perspective of hope takes shape.

This sense of rejuvenation leads many people to grab their broom, mop, and bucket to get their homes ready for the warmer months ahead – but all the scrubbing and polishing may actually be putting a new shine on their mental and physical health as well. Cleaning the grime off the mirrors helps them see more clearly, and cleaning that hard-to-reach spot on the hardwood makes other challenging tasks seem like they can finally be accomplished.

Below are a few ways a spring deep-clean can benefit mental well-being and lead to better habits, a more balanced lifestyle, and a new positive outlook.

A Clean House and a Clear Mind

Countless homeowners have noticed over the years that, for some reason, they're just better able to think clearly when they come home to a tidy house with clear countertops, fresh towels, and shiny sinks. As cobwebs are cleared out and time is invested in organizing and decluttering, cloudy thoughts and mental clutter are eliminated.

Those who streamline their surroundings and cultivate a harmonious environment in their homes find themselves with fewer distractions throughout the day, resulting in reduced stress and a better ability to relax. When the mind is no longer distracted by the dishwasher that needs unloading or the toilets that need a wipe, thought patterns can naturally return to more important things. Mental clarity, the ability to focus, and the capability to consciously assess and reevaluate priorities immediately improve, leading to more clearly defined goals and better efficiency at achieving them.

Rather than thinking about cleaning as a chore that has to be done, would-be cleaners should think of this time of kitchen cleaning and window washing as an opportunity for new beginnings, a chance for improved productivity, and to capitalize on the enhanced self-esteem that comes along with facilitating a home environment that's easy to maintain and helps its inhabitants reach their full potential.

Reflect and Grow To Promote a Sense of Well-Being

An important part of spring cleaning is first taking a moment to take stock of the current situation, evaluate the surroundings, and reflect on daily habits and practices needed to improve. This can be a fulfilling exercise.

Coming up with a plan and implementing its execution often leads to a sense of excitement over the possibilities and new beginnings that lie ahead and can make a tangible difference in someone's overall sense of wellness.

Feeling productive and finally tackling that tarnished silver collection that has been on the to-do list forever provides relief from nagging stress. It can clear the air to allow for more fun and exciting plans to come into view on the horizon. Furthermore, overcoming an obstacle such as a dreaded task can build confidence.

There's plenty of opportunity for tackling dreaded tasks when it comes to spring cleaning, along with opportunities for challenging oneself in small ways to build confidence little by little.

Additionally, the Anxiety & Depression Association of America has noted that the actual physical activity of cleaning and organizing can help relieve anxious and depressive feelings. That, coupled with the relief of seeing a cleaner home come into view, can be an instant mood boost.

Create Boundaries and Strengthen Relationships

For those who live with others, spring cleaning can provide great benefits that can help strengthen relationships within the household. Of course, tidying up, bathroom cleaning, fixture polishing, and removing the soap scum from the grout reduces stress and day-to-day inconvenience for everyone, but there's even more to it. Spending a few days planning and tidying together can have perks beyond clean floors and dusted bookshelves.

Mindfully setting guidelines for improving the home environment and keeping it cleaner on an ongoing basis can help create healthy boundaries and a sense of hope for better days ahead. Working together as a team and creating a plan around the shared goal of a clean home and mutually beneficial results can build bonds whether the team members are family members, friends, or roommates.

The transparency of the situation leads to something as simple as taking the initiative to mix up a homemade ant killer recipe to tackle a household pest issue or sharing a trick for removing spray paint to be seen as a kind deed to everyone in the house. Feelings of appreciation allow the relationship to be further enhanced and all parties to feel a little bit kinder and more understanding toward one another.

Build Healthy Habits and Boost Physical Health

Cleaning a house, with all of its scrubbing, lifting, bending, and additional steps, helps burn calories and build muscle. When cleaning becomes a regular occurrence, as can happen when homeowners want to maintain their sparkly clean house, these benefits intensify. Spring cleaning can be a catalyst for a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Another amazing benefit of creating a cleaner atmosphere is that a tidier kitchen can actually lead to healthier food choices. According to a study from Cornell Food & Brand Lab in Ithaca, NY, females are particularly affected by their surroundings regarding how they eat. The study found that female participants ate twice as many sweet treats like cookies when they were in a messy, chaotic kitchen environment compared to when they were in a clean space.

Regular Cleaning Tasks That Provide Benefits to Mental and Physical Health

For improved physical health, the best house cleaning tasks for a spring-clean session are the ones that get the blood pumping and muscles working and create a spotless environment to enjoy.

Exterior cleaning jobs often require more ground to be covered and thus encourage more steps throughout the course of the day. Outdoor window cleaning with a spray bottle of glass cleaner and a squeegee is a dependable source of physical exertion, along with garden cleanup, porch sweeping, and power-washing patios.

For an instant mood boost and sustained mental health benefits, tackling the general cleaning tasks that are the most dreaded will provide an immediate sense of relief. These can sometimes be the dirtiest jobs around the house that require a homeowner to disinfect and remove germs, or they can be the tasks that seem cumbersome, such as sanitizing and stain-removal on upholstery or cleaning carpet.

The post-cleaning glow – when there's a visible improvement in the home's cleanliness and when the house is left smelling fresh and free from odors – will make anyone feel better.

For those looking to improve their lives in all areas of mental and physical well-being, tackling that dreaded spring deep cleaning job head-on rather than calling house cleaning services to hire a housekeeper is a great place to start.

Message in a Bottle Review: Smashing the Jukebox Musical (And That’s a Good Thing) https://wealthofgeeks.com/message-in-a-bottle-review-smashing-the-jukebox-musical-and-thats-a-good-thing/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 21:19:13 +0000 https://wealthofgeeks.com/?p=1234674 To anyone currently grinding his teeth at the sight of Message in a Bottle, the new tour of the West End dance show featuring the music of Sting, or to anyone thinking another frigging jukebox musical!?…we forgive you in advance for the reaction.

Jukebox musicals, of course, have become as plentiful on the Great White Way as pigeon dung, and often share similar quality. That doesn’t stop producers from littering Broadway and the West End with muiscals overstuffed with pop music hits and underwritten plots. On the contrary, it might add to the appeal: tourists love walking into a theater to see a show that affirms their fandom and offers no provocation to deeper thoughts or empathy.

Jukebox Smashed

message in a bottle 2
Image Credit: Lynn Theisen/Broadway in Hollywood.

Message in a Bottle, the UK dance musical making its North American premiere at the Hollywood Pantages violates that trend. Though set to an entirely prerecorded soundtrack of both solo hits by Sting and The Police, and though the performers do not utter a word on stage, the show invites the audience to feel and even think something about its content. That doesn’t make it groundbreaking, but in an era of ever-more-pandering Greatest Hits shows, it does make it a refreshing anomaly.

As directed and choreographed by Kate Prince, Message in a Bottle tells the story of a family living in a faraway desert country. Violence interrupts their idyllic life, and the rise of a dictatorship forces them to flee overseas to seek a new home. Once they arrive on land again, they endure life in a refugee camp almost as violent as the home they fled. Corruption, prostitution, and trauma all infect their minds as they struggle to hold on to love and hope that they will find peace and happiness again.

If the summary sounds general, it is: the dance nature of the show precludes any deep detail about the characters or their situations. Everything here happens in pantomime against minimalist sets. The production owes much to the lighting design by Natasha Chivers, which creates a mood to recontextualize Sting’s music.

A New Move

Message in a bottle
Image Credit: Helen Maybanks/Broadway in Hollywood.

That doesn’t prevent Message in a Bottle from a few on-the-nose needle drops: “Roxanne,” of course, deals with one character forced into prostitution, while “Don’t Stand So Close To Me,” becomes a literalized comment on gang violence. That these obvious uses of songs don’t invite giggles from the audience testifies to the power of Prince’s direction. Message in a Bottle uses pop songs, but that doesn’t mean an audience can’t take them seriously. Other tunes fare much better. “Englishman in New York,” a tribute to queer scion Quentin Crisp, becomes a scene of culture shock. “The Bed’s Too Big Without You” evolves from a heartbreak ballad into one character’s post-traumatic stress nightmares.

Yet the great innovation here comes from Prince’s choreography. Like the greatest work of Jerome Robbins, the movement in Message in a Bottle somehow manages to convey character and plot. The dance reveals personality dynamics, both in how the performers dance with and against one another. Characters feel distinct, and their relationships have a specificity. Viewers come to know these characters and even care about them. Message in a Bottle could have devolved into bombastic virtue signaling. As a credit to both Prince and her cast of extraordinary dancers, this story always feels sincere.

Message in a Bottle strikes a good balance between pop entertainment and avant-garde expressionism, blending the two into a performance both accessible and provocative. At a lean two hours, it never drags, and though Sting’s tunes feel radio-friendly as ever, the commitment of the cast injects them with newfound drama. Jukebox musicals don’t have a reputation for depth or challenging plots, but Message in a Bottle defies convention to tell a story with real emotional power that impresses and, above all, deserves to be seen.

Rating: 8 out of 10 Specs.

Message in a Bottle plays at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre through February 11 before continuing on to the Buell Theatre in Denver (Feb. 13-25) and the Cadillac Theatre in Chicago (Feb. 28-Mar. 3.) A full list of cities and dates can be found on the official tour website.

Underappreciated PS5 Games To Enjoy https://wealthofgeeks.com/underappreciated-ps5-games-to-enjoy/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 18:00:45 +0000 https://wealthofgeeks.com/?p=1231778 One thing the PlayStation 5 has in spades is bonafide blockbuster games. We're talking titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2God of War: Ragnarök, and more. Despite these heavy hitters hogging the spotlight, there are plenty of underrated gems to discover.

With a small handful of hotly-anticipated video games sucking much of the oxygen out of the room every year, who could blame anyone for missing a few hidden gems along the way. Whether judged unfairly or just passed over too quickly, a lot of underrated games fly under the radar every year. That’s where we come in, though, to shed some light on some great underrated PS5 games that everyone can play on their big shiny PlayStation 5 right now.

1. Lost in Random

Lost in Random Game

Drenched in German expressionism stands Lost in Random, one of the PS5’s most underrated games so far. The winding trees and twisted buildings immediately make the player feel like they’ve been plopped into a Tim Burton movie or MediEvil’s Gallowmere. The dark and quirky town of Random is indeed its own place, though, full of appropriately bizarre townsfolk and peculiar situations for our heroine, even as she leads an effort to rescue her sister, the aptly named Odd, from the evil queen’s grasp.

The literal roll of the dice determines everything in Random. It shapes characters' lives and much of the Lost in Random‘s gameplay. Luck shapes combat here, as the weapons and abilities for every fight are determined— you guessed it— randomly. There is some choice in the matter, though, with the ability to customize a deck of cards that represents the options. Still, the ability to think quickly and play the hand that's dealt is often what separates success from failure. The hand-crafted levels, charming characters, and extremely unique gameplay set this one apart from the herd in all the right ways.

2. Scarlet Nexus

Scarlet Nexus

Scarlet Nexus might be an acquired taste, especially if would-be gamers aren’t acclimated to anime-style action games. We can promise that it is well worth getting over that hump. The combat is intricate, fast, and extremely chaotic, with lots of meters and cool-downs to monitor. Enemies respond differently to different elements, which is typical of the action RPGs nowadays. These strange creatures called “visitors,” which are fusions of aliens and random inanimate objects, all bring increasingly challenging battles to the player. They require effective management of the game’s large roster of telekinetic attacks as well as borrowing different powers from party members. The party system itself also runs quite deep as players get to assign different buffs to each member as well as direct their focus to be defensive, aggressive, or some balance of the two. The campaign runs about 30 hours long, which is nothing to shake a stick at, but that is effectively doubled if one decides to replay it with another of the two available characters and see the story from their perspective.

3. The Pathless

The Pathless

Being a launch title for a hotly-anticipated franchise can be a blessing or a curse. In the case of The Pathless, it might have been more of the latter than the former. Being overshadowed by bigger launch titles like Godfall, Astro’s Playroom, and Demon’s Souls was unfortunate, especially given how great of a time The Pathless offers. Gliding around this game’s open world while hunting down the next boss feels vaguely reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus much of the time, and that’s a compliment we don’t make lightly. Taking in the gorgeous environments and solving the light puzzles is just as engaging as wrangling the game’s many dangerous enemies. Because of all this, despite a lower-budget, The Pathless is an extraordinary game that all PS5 owners should consider.

4. Soulstice

Soulstice

Soulstice might evoke the cornucopia of hyper-active action games from 20 years ago, but it has a few tricks up its sleeve to stand out. This is a game that is ultimately about duality. From managing the distinct combat systems of our two heroines, Briar and Lute, to alternating between casting the banishment and evocation fields to reveal hidden items and deal damage to certain foes, it challenges the player to go back and forth between different mindsets. Even the camera system tends to bounce back and forth between the classic fixed camera of the early 2000s and the more free-form style of modern games, depending on the situation. Between the excellent combat, interesting characters, and attractive, gothic level designs, Soulstice brings a lot more to the table than it tends to get credit for.

5. Thumper

Thumper

While THUMPER technically landed on Sony’s PS4 first,  a souped-up version runs natively on the PS5. THUMPER is perhaps even more of a hidden gem on the PS5 than it was on the PS4. One part rhythm game, one part horror game, and one part acid trip, THUMPER will make a lasting impression. Sliding down an infinite pathway while avoiding spikes and grinding on rails isn’t the most revolutionary idea in theory. Still, in execution, this game puts such a hard twist on the concept that it becomes impossible to ignore. The odd time signatures and offbeat music make the already challenging gameplay even more disorienting, so while we highly recommend it, we also suggest preparing for a steep learning curve.

6. Tormented Souls

Tormented Souls

Retro horror fans rallied around Tormented Souls when it was released, and rightfully so. Despite some rather obtuse puzzles, this is one of the better horror games of the generation. Some modern horror enthusiasts shrugged it off, citing the fixed camera angles and high difficulty, but we highly suggest revisiting that thought process.

7. Bugsnax

Bugsnax

Bugsnax made a bit of a splash as a rather eye-catching launch title for the PS5, but quickly faded into obscurity soon afterwards. The over-simplified notion of it being “basically Pokemon Snap” surely figures into that reception. Regardless, Bugsnax is a rather special game that many PS5 owners already have in their library thanks to their PS+ subscription. The core gameplay resembles Snap in some ways, but it veers headfirst into its own directions more often than not. Some rather heavy themes about grief and trauma get tastefully explored, the gameplay expands greatly, and the rather strange world of Snacktooth Island quickly becomes much more than it seems. For those who find themselves in the mood for something a little different, Bugsnax is waiting.

8. Sifu

Sifu

Like Bugsnax, SIFU generated a bit of buzz around its launch but didn’t maintain it for long. It has, however, maintained a rather solid cult following, though, and it’s fairly easy to see why. The addictive nature of trying levels multiple times to improve combat skills combined with the urgency of maintaining precious lives is a great mix for this off-beat brawler. While gameplay offers a generous amount of lives, once they’re used up, it’s back to the beginning. Branching pathways and a wealth of different types of breakable weapons help ensure that players can win stages multiple ways, and each attempt will almost certainly be different from the last. Timing and improvisation are paramount here, and the satisfaction of mastering them is palpable.

9. Cult of The Lamb underrated PS5 games

Cult of The Lamb

Dungeon crawlers, strategy games, and rogue-likes are dime-a-dozen these days. Many of them are good, but few of them are great. Cult of the Lamb stands out as one of the great entries, and one of the underrated PS5 games.

The juxtaposition of the cute main character and the occult setting catches the eye, but the satisfying mix of additive dungeon crawling and team management keeps folks playing it. Excellent side activities also go a long way to hanging onto the player’s attention. While not as deep as some other dungeon crawlers or base builders, it manages to create a striking flavor of the genres it borrows from.

10. Chorus

Chorus

The shoot ‘em up genre dates back as old as gaming itself, yet few games have truly revolutionized it. While Chorus doesn’t quite reinvent the wheel, it does bring the arcade shooter formula firmly into the 21st century with a captivating story, outstanding graphics, and a few modernizations to the typical control scheme. It may start a bit slow, but once the stage is set, Chorus brings the heat in all the ways that matter.

11. Valkyrie Elysium

Valkyrie Elysium

Valkyrie Elysium got a bad rap, in our opinion. On one hand, sure, it is a rather slimmed-down version of what fans of the Valkyrie games generally expect. It also rather ham-fistedly converts combat into a much more conventional hack-n-slash format. Some long-time fans of the franchise were disappointed to see this transition. On the other hand, a great character-driven action game emerges from the wreckage of that destruction. Elysium’s sparkly combat is fluid, fast, and fun. Calling on different “einherjars” also mixes things nicely as they imbue the current weapon with a element while they help out in battle. Taking out growing numbers of enemies with increasingly complex combinations of an ever-expanding arsenal of weapons, divine art attacks, and the powerful einherjars, always feels gratifying. The buttery smooth frame rate the PS5 version offers is also a welcome bonus.

12. The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe

The Stanley Parable is already a well-known classic among PC gamers, but we console folk are a little late to the party. Ultra Deluxe effectively ends that problem (at least in this case, anyway) with a highly optimized version of the game and some extra content packed in. Given that The Stanley Parable is best experienced as blindly as possible, we won’t spoil it here. Suffice it to say this game is not at all what it seems. It has some of the best writing and game design of the last 20 years and easily warrants multiple playthroughs.

13. Final Vendetta

Final Vendetta

It seems that a few retro-themed beat ‘em ups drop every year or so, and while Final Vendetta certainly fits right into that sub-genre, it is a strikingly successful entry of the genre. The outstanding aptitude of developer Bitmap Bureau for animation and retro character design is once again on display here. Instead of the top-down action games they are mostly known for, Final Vendetta reels more in-line with Streets of Rage or Vigilante as a challenging beat ‘em up, that, thankfully, doesn’t cost a quarter every time a player loses a life. The music, visuals, and controls all rank on-par with— if not exceed the quality of— the many arcade classics that inspired it. Fans of challenging arcade action need not look elsewhere.

14. Evil West

Evil West

There’s a lot to like with Evil West, from the Western setting that mixes overly violent vampire and werewolf slaying action to the unabashedly arcadey combat system. Instead of managing actual ammo for the various weapons, Evil West opts for a cool-down system that while odd at first, becomes second nature. Having the shotgun, rifle, pistol, health regeneration, and more all assigned to their own buttons is a surprisingly intuitive and fun way to blast through hordes of monsters for the 15-ish hours of its campaign. The game also feels a lot like the new God of War games, with a close-up camera angle and flashing arrows that highlights potential threats in Jesse’s periphery, both of which mix into Evil West’s gameplay quite nicely. Reviewers often cite the lack of variety with the enemies, which is a valid point to make. Still, that doesn't bother us when smashing them into smithereens refuses to stop being so morbidly fun.

15. Severed Steel

Severed Steel

The first-person shooter genre seems like it gets a boost with lots of retro-ish games that strip back the pomp and realism in favor of speedy, simple, visceral action as of late. Severed Steel falls into that trend, although unlike many recent Doom and Quake-like games, Severed Steel looks and plays much more like a modern game with fully 3D environments and realistic physics. Sliding and jumping around these levels while barely clinging to life enthralls a player and testifies to the power of good-level design. Shooter fans of all stripes have plenty to look forward to here, and PS5 owners, in particular, have a slick 120 frame-rate option to enjoy if they wish.

13 Etiquette Rules People Break All the Time https://wealthofgeeks.com/mind-your-manners-13-little-known-etiquette-rules-people-break-all-the-time/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 17:30:45 +0000 https://wealthofgeeks.com/?p=1163165 The Kingsman films popularized the phrase “manners maketh man” — but try telling that to the grubby teens who practically shoved granny out of the way to get the next spot in the McDonald's line. Where have our manners gone?

1. A Missed Call Warrants a Return Call, Not a Text

Woman on Phone 2

Text messaging has been a boon for the socially inept. How many times have you called someone, gone to voicemail, and received a return text minutes or hours later?

If we call, it's because there's a conversation worth talking about. Texting won't do. Warm up those vocal cords and return the missed call.

2. The Chardonnay You Brought the Host Is Not for You

Wine

It's not uncommon for a dinner guest to bring a bottle of wine in adherence to the “don't come empty-handed” rule, only for the host to immediately pop the bottle and pour some in the guest's glass. Put a cork in it, host, and leave the cork in it.

Proper etiquette is for the host to drink the bottle of wine on their own time rather than share the wine with the same guest who gifted it. You wouldn't give your kid a pack of baseball cards for Christmas and then take back half the pack for yourself, would you?

3. Don't Talk on the Phone in Public

Woman on Phone 3

Unless you can't possibly avoid it, speaking on the phone in the company of strangers is terrible form. Enduring crowds is dreadful enough without poor strangers facing the tedium of your appointment scheduling, gossip, or whatever else you're blabbering on about.

“Can you hear me now?” Yes, yes, we can. This entire Jersey Mike's can hear you, Fred. Find a secluded spot, send a text message, or just put the phone away.

4. Pass the Food to the Right

Dinner party
Image Credit: Yuri A / Shutterstock.

When you pass the salt and pepper, pretend you're following the first verse of the Cupid Shuffle — to the right, to the right, to the right, to the right.

According to Reader's Digest, this bit of etiquette is because people are generally right-handed. Passing food to the right helps avoid the dreaded side-dish traffic jam, which worsens the plight of countless starving diners each year.

5. Your Napkin Goes on Your Chair, Not the Table

shutterstock 1913022301

While placing a spotless linen napkin on the dining table might seem harmless, you'd never get away with it if you were dining with King Charles or the Habsburgs. The napkin goes on the chair when you get up from the table, especially if you have taken edible shrapnel to the bib during your meal.

6. Avoid Flagging Down the Waiter

Young happy man using smart phone while making payment to a waiter in a pub.

So long as your server is checking on your table reasonably frequently, try to avoid calling them over like your yellow lab. Direct your most laser-focused gaze toward the server's eyes, and they'll eventually catch notice.

This rule goes out the window when your server is oblivious. If you feel ignored or neglected, break the rules and stick a subtle finger in the air. Heck, break out your megaphone if you feel justified in doing so.

7. A No-Show Is Not an RSVP

shutterstock 2005315742

Crazy as it may seem to the old timers, some uncultured swine believe an RSVP is only necessary if you're going to attend an event. In fact, a “répondez s'il vous plaît” translates to “respond, if you please”. Whether you're attending or not, just respond… if you please.

8. Avoid All Iterations of “I'm Going Potty”

restroom sign

When you announce your impending restroom visit, you paint mental images that nobody asked for. Announce that you got a promotion. Proclaim that you're getting married. Keep your journey to the urinal to yourself.

9. Send a Written Thank You

close-up photo of a female hands holding a pink invitation envelope with a wax seal, a gift certificate, a card, a wedding invitation card, writing a letter

Author Dale Carnegie advises giving genuine compliments to win friends and influence others. A compliment (and thank you) hits way harder when it's handwritten on personalized stationery.

Too many people take the gratitude-inal path of least resistance: a verbal thank you. Real ones go a step further, writing a letter of thanks, licking the envelope, sticking the stamp, and mailing that sucker.

10. Remove Your Shades Before Saying “Hey”

sunglasses

Eye contact is becoming a lost art due to the magnetic pull of cell phone screens, the demise of cotillion classes, and the rise of conditions that make it tough for young people to socialize. Even adults often fail to remove their Ray-Bans when greeting others, including those they're meeting for the first time.

You're not Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, or Maverick from Top Gun. Take the shades off and look people in the eye — at least until introductions are complete.

11. Don't Speak Ill of the Dead…or Living

shutterstock 89991049

Back in the day, it was a big deal if the Montagues and the Capulets uttered a bad word about each other. The French and English worked hard not to speak too hostilely about their sworn enemy. Speaking ill of others didn't just come with severe consequences (namely generational feuds and armed conflicts). People just knew that bad-mouthing others was bad form.

12. Be Five Minutes Early

woman worrying, trying to be punctual with anxiety checking time on watch

It's not enough to beat your haircut time by thirty seconds. Be five minutes early, at least.

Everyone has an excuse for being late, and none of them are acceptable. If your dog died, wipe those tears and proceed to your appointment. Car crash? Put some gauze on it and get yourself to your lunch date. Those with strong etiquette act as if others' time is always more valuable than their own. They're never late.

13. Answer the Phone Like an Adult

Corded Phone, vintage phone, talking, conversation, woman, girl, sitting

If you're still blurting out the “whazaaaaaa?” from the late-90s Budweiser commercials when you answer the phone, you're probably someone I'd love to hang with. However, you'd never last in high society.

Proper phone etiquette calls for a simple “Hello” or perhaps a “Hi, this is Dale” when picking up your cell phone. First impressions mean everything, so don't answer your phone like a clown.

23 Ways To Boost Immunity in Your Child During Cold Season https://wealthofgeeks.com/boost-immunity-in-your-child/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 17:05:02 +0000 https://wealthofgeeks.com/?p=1215755 As most of my readers know, I'm a Canadian expat-dad living permanently in South Korea. As a dad, there's nothing more important than keeping my child healthy and protected, especially during the cold season when the risk of illnesses like the flu is high.

I know it's impossible to shield your child from every germ completely, but there are good strategies to boost their immune system and minimize the chances of them falling ill. In this article, I'll explore 23 effective ways to fortify your child's immune system during the cold season.

In Korea, it gets cold – not as cold as my hometown, Ottawa, Canada, but it dips well below the zero mark a few times every winter. I've come up with some drinks and food ideas from a Korean's point of view (my wifey) to help your child's immunity this season! Most of these might be new to you, but don't be shy about trying them. They are all yummy and good for you and the kids.

Natural Ways To Good Health!

1. Well-Balanced Diet

A healthy diet plays a crucial role in strengthening your child's immune system. By providing them with a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, you can ensure that their body receives the essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals necessary for a robust immune response.

Encourage your child to consume foods high in immunity-boosting components such as:

  • Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits – rich in vitamin C
  • Berries – packed with antioxidants
  • Yogurt – a source of probiotics (see Yakurt drink below)
  • Leafy greens, like spinach and kale – abundant in vitamins and minerals
  • Lean meats and poultry – providing zinc
  • Nuts and seeds – for healthy fats

Check the list below for an awesome list of drinks and foods to boost children's immune systems.

2. Plenty of Exercise

Physical activity is not only crucial for your child's physical development but also for a strong immune system. Taking note from the experts, engaging in regular exercise helps circulate white blood cells and antibodies, which are vital for fighting off infections.

Depending on where you are in the world, playing outside might be out of the question if it's too cold. But there are alternatives as well.

Encourage your child to participate in age-appropriate physical activities such as swimming, martial arts, badminton, or joining sports teams. It's not easy to play outside during the winter months, but plenty of indoor activities and clubs are available.

Making exercise a family affair will promote a healthy lifestyle and boost your child's immune system function.

3. Adequate Sleep

Sufficient sleep is fundamental for a healthy immune system, especially in children. The body undergoes cell repair and regeneration, including immune cells, during deep sleep.

Establish a regular schedule for your child and ensure they get the recommended amount of sleep for their age group. How much sleep do you aim for?

  • Toddlers: 11 to 14 hours of sleep per day
  • Preschoolers: 10 to 13 hours of sleep per day
  • School-age children: 9 to 12 hours of sleep per night
  • Teenagers: 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night

A good night's sleep is so important, and you'll provide your child's immune system with the necessary rest to function optimally.

4. Good Hygiene Practices

I think most parents got into REAL hand washing during the COVID-19 pandemic. But, teaching your child good hygiene practices is essential in reducing their overall risk of bacterial infection. Encourage them to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before meals and after using the bathroom.

Carry hand sanitizer for situations where handwashing isn't possible.

Additionally, emphasize the importance of covering their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of germs. You'll help protect your child from common viruses and bacteria by instilling these habits.

5. Stress Management

According to research, stress can weaken the immune system, making your child more susceptible to illnesses. As parents, it's important to help your child manage stress effectively. Encourage relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or yoga. Create a nurturing and supportive environment where your child feels comfortable expressing their emotions.

Spending quality time together as a family and engaging in activities they enjoy can also help reduce stress levels. By promoting emotional well-being, you'll contribute to a stronger immune system.

6. Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for children to maintain overall health and support the immune system. It helps flush out toxins from the body and ensures the optimal functioning of bodily systems, including the immune response.

Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Herbal teas, warm soups, and diluted fruit juices can also increase fluid intake.

7. Vaccinations

Kids hate needles (dads do, too), but it's a necessary evil. Keeping your child up to date with their recommended vaccinations is crucial for their immune system to stay primed and ready to fight off dangerous pathogens.

Vaccines provide essential protection against various contagious diseases and significantly reduce the risk of falling ill during flu season. Consult with your child's healthcare provider to ensure they receive all the necessary vaccinations according to their age and local guidelines, as well as their annual flu shot.

16 Unique Foods & Drinks for Immune Support

I've included various drinks, teas, and food from around the world here as we are big tea drinkers at home, including my 7-year-old son.

Korean Ginseng Tea (South Korea)

Ginseng is believed to have immune-boosting properties. Korean ginseng tea is a popular choice to support the immune system. Ginseng also comes in different forms: candies, jellies, supplements, energy drinks, and raw.

Turmeric Milk (India)

Turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Turmeric milk is a traditional Indian remedy to boost immunity.

Green Tea (South Korea)

Green tea is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which may help enhance immune function. For that extra kick, add a few teaspoons of lemon juice.

Honey Lemon Ginger Tea (Various Countries)

A classic remedy found in various cultures, this tea combines the immune-boosting properties of honey, vitamin C from lemon, and the anti-inflammatory effects of ginger.

Amla Juice (India)

Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is high in Vitamin C and antioxidants. Amla juice is a popular way to incorporate its immune-boosting benefits.

DoenJang Soup (South Korea)

The Korean version of Miso, a traditional super-food served here in Korea, is based on fermented beans and contains probiotics that may help with gut health and contribute to overall immune function.

Chrysanthemum Tea (China)

Chrysanthemum tea is known for its antioxidant properties and is often consumed to support respiratory health.

Tulsi (Holy Basil) Tea (India)

Tulsi is revered in Ayurveda for its immune-boosting and adaptogenic properties. Tulsi tea is a popular way to incorporate it into the diet.

Red Date Tea (China/Korea)

Red dates (jujubes) are rich in vitamins and minerals. Red date tea is consumed for its potential immune-boosting benefits. We have a tiny date tree in our garden, and we are waiting (patiently) for the day that it yields enough fruit to make some tea for us.

Yakult (Japan/Korea)

Yakult is a probiotic Yogust-style drink containing Lactobacillus casei Shirota, which may help support a healthy gut and, consequently, the immune system.

Masala Chai (India)

Masala chai, a spiced tea, often contains ingredients like ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon, which may have immune-boosting properties.

Garlic Milk (Various Countries)

O…M…G… You might be thinking. But garlic is known for its immune-boosting and antibacterial properties. Garlic milk is a remedy found in various cultures. Check out recipes on the web – it’s not that bad!

Seolleongtang (South Korea)

My son’s ultimate go-to soup! Seolleongtang is a traditional Korean soup made from ox bones and brisket. It is rich in nutrients and is believed to have immune-boosting properties.

Echinacea Tea (West)

Echinacea is an herb known for its potential immune-boosting effects. Echinacea tea is a common Western remedy during the cold season.

Sweet Potatoes (Various Countries)

The amazing purple potato power. These sweet guys are synonymous with the cold winter months here on the peninsula. They offer a great taste and are packed with vitamin A, which helps the immune system. Young children love their soft interiors.

From street vendors and grocery shops to many homes, bake these lovely sweet potatoes in aluminum wrap for about 40 minutes in the air fryer until they are tender. Yum!

Balloon Flower and Pear Tea (South Korea)

This strange-sounding tea blend can be easily purchased at your local Asian food grocer or simply online. Although balloon flowers are not very common to Westerners, they are often used here in drinks and teas.

The contents of the jar are uber-sweet, like jam, but they dissolve well in hot water, giving you and the kids an immune-boosting drink.

Boost the Immune System for Both You and Your Child

I hope this article helps all the parents out there with these power drinks that might help your family be healthy and avoid the common cold this season. I know some of my ideas might seem strange, but they are incredible to drink for their taste and effectiveness.

Remember to consult with healthcare professionals for personalized advice and stay proactive in promoting your child's well-being. So, get your drink on!

30 Essential Tips for Cheap Vacations https://wealthofgeeks.com/tips-for-cheap-vacations/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 16:30:35 +0000 https://wealthofgeeks.com/?p=1214409 We are firm believers that everyone deserves a good vacation. However, the combo of a hotel, attraction tickets, and flights can be prohibitive. There are alternatives if you can be flexible and creative. Try out some of these tips for cheap vacations and avoid breaking the bank.

1. Camping

Complimentary breakfast is becoming standard at many hotel chains. Other perks to look for are free shuttles to local attractions and an indoor pool. A valuable perk is in-house entertainment, such as movie nights and crafts for kids on site.

 7. Travel Mid-Week

Weekday stays are almost always cheaper than visits that last over a weekend. An added benefit is that attractions in the area may also be less crowded.

8. Join a Hotel's Loyalty Program

Score some members-only rates and rack up loyalty rewards. Research the various hotel programs and determine which fits your traveling style best.

9. Boondocking

Boondocking is also called “dry camping.” Government agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, the National Forest Service, and the Department of Fish and Wildlife allow free camping on public lands in designated areas. Pitch a tent, park your RV, or sleep in your van, but no facilities are available. While not technically boondocking, Walmart allows people to park in their parking lot overnight.

10. Try Public Transportation

Your destination might have a fantastic public transport system. Buses, subways, and trollies are frequently available in tourist destinations. Buy a pass for the length of your stay and save on car rental.

11. Pick the Flight First

Use a tool such as Google Flights or Skyscanner to pick your destination based on where the cheap flights are. If you are flexible, this can be a fun way to decide on your destination while saving cash.

12. Use Flight and Gas Trackers

Set up price alerts if you've already decided on a destination or booked the flight. You can use the tools mentioned in the last tip to see if you can snag the lowest fare to your destination. If you're road-tripping, install an app such as GasBuddy to alert you to upcoming gas stations and their pricing.

13. Peer-To-Peer Car Sharing

Turo and Getaround are two apps offering an alternative to traditional car rentals. Plug in your destination and see if anyone is leasing a car near you. Some vehicles can be rented by the day, even by the hour. This can be a huge convenience.

14. Scope Out All Available Airports

Play around with flights to airports surrounding your destination. Some travelers have found that flights into and out of smaller airports are cheaper. A coworker saw the opposite to be true. A USA Today article reports that smaller airports near larger metro areas are more affordable, while smaller airports in more remote locations are more expensive.

15. Destinations as Main Attractions

Places such as beaches or mountains offer built-in entertainment for cheap. If you're content to spend most of your time on the beach or hiking and biking in the mountains, you have the makings for cheap vacations

If you're going to be eating out, use the Seated app. You can make reservations through the app. When you upload your receipt from participating restaurants, you'll get a percentage of the bill back in rewards. Cash them out for a variety of gift cards.

30. Embrace Senior Discounts

The Five Coolest Cars Turning 25 in 2024 https://wealthofgeeks.com/coolest-cars-turning-twenty-five/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 15:30:28 +0000 https://wealthofgeeks.com/?p=1198904 Twenty-five years is the magic number when, according to the federal government's vehicle import regulations, car collectors can legally import any automotive their heart desires (and their piggy bank can afford) regardless of whether it adheres to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. For each vehicle, it all comes down to when its manufacturers first produced it, meaning that a car with an inaugural production date of June 6, 1999, will have to wait until June 6, 2024, before a collector can legally import it into the United States.

These five vehicles will all pass the quarter-century mark sometime this year and are worth looking out for.

The Nissan Silvia (S15)

Japanese automaker Nissan pulled their 240X model out of the United States at the close of 1998. However, the following year, they revamped and reintroduced the Silvia, as they call it, in the Land of the Rising Sun. The sporty coupe, also known as the S15, closed out the 20th century with two options under the hood: a 2.0-liter inline-four and a turbocharged version. In conjunction with the S15’s six-speed manual gearbox, the turbo version could muster around 250 horsepower. With rear-wheel drive and an aesthetic that screams Y2K-era racing video games, the S15 is a driving purist’s ideal fast and furious daily driver. The Nissan Silvia (S15) started production in January of 1999.

Most car enthusiasts and quite a few movie fans will undoubtedly recognize the Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) as the vehicle that the late Paul Walker drove in the Fast and Furious franchise. (Fun fact: Walker’s R34 sold for a whopping $1.3 million at an auction last May.) The R34 came with the kind of engine that makes car enthusiasts salivate: an RB26DETT. It’s a beautifully engineered 2.6-liter twin-turbo inline-six that can generate over 300 horsepower. Its monstrous tuning ability makes the RB26 engine much beloved among gear heads. It doesn’t require any internal changes to amp up its tire-screeching prowess. Also, the R34 comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive. The Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) was first produced in January 1999.

While there are other Porsche 911s available in the United States, is anyone going to argue that there can be too many Porsche 911s? Anyone who loves beautifully crafted foreign cars, or just cars in general, will fall head over heels as soon as they look at the 996.1’s jaw-dropping aerodynamic curves. And that’s not to mention the German automaker’s iconic egg yolk shaped headlights. The 996.1 sports a 3.6-liter flat-six that generates 345 horsepower. Porsche produced the 996.1 throughout 1999.

The TVR Tuscan Speed Six sports a formidable straight-six engine with over 350 horsepower and the killer looks one expects from a British sports car worthy of the world’s most famous super-spy. Of course, the TVR Tuscan Speed Six has graced the silver screen, but not with James Bond tearing it up behind the wheel. Instead, John Travolta drove the Tuscan in the 2001 action thriller Swordfish. While that film may not have made a lasting impression, the Tuscan’s gorgeous styling certainly has. British sports car manufacturer TVR produced the Tuscan from 1999 to 2006.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI

Car and Driver touts the Evolution VI as an “all–around sports sedan” that is a step up from its predecessor, the Evolution V. Sporting all-wheel drive and a four–cylinder turbocharged engine that generated a solid 276 horsepower, the Evolution VI also featured better engine cooling and stylistic trappings than the Evolution V. Additionally, Mitsubishi revamped the Evolution VI's suspension by introducing aluminum components that also gave the vehicle smoother handling. A five-speed manual gearbox is the cherry on top here for driving purists. Mitsubishi first produced the Evolution VI in January of 1999.
